History
Cahir Castle is one of the largest and most well preserved castles in Ireland. Built in the 13th century, it’s located on a rocky island in the middle of the River Suir. It served as a stronghold for the Butler family until it finally fell to the Earl of Sussex in 1599.
Of all the castles we visited in Ireland, Cahir was the most “castle” like. It’s surrounded by the river and has to be accessed via bridge It was a large walled fortress with a yard to house a garrison during times of war. There was a portcullis with gate still in tact. Winding stairs and different levels of rooms galore. It is a rather large property and a nice break from the traditional tower houses you usually find across the island.
