Nullawil
By Smug
The Nullawil Silo was the third stop on my silo tour. The first of several installations done by the artist Sam Bates (Smug). Smug quickly became one of my favorite artists on the trail, and I ended up spending two additional days chasing down other Smug installations on my return to Melbourne.
Interesting facts about the silos at Nullwil: they were started in July of 2019 and completed just 14 days later. The dog featured was Jack the kelpie. As a nod to Nullawil’s rich Aboriginal history, Jack’s dog tag features a galah and stick. The Aboriginal word “Nulla” means killing stick and “Wil”, short for willock, for Galah, a small Australian species of cockatoo with pink head.
